The virtual world is a vast, user-created universe brimming with possibilities, and mastering the basics is the key to unlocking its full potential.

In this hands-on, interactive class, we'll demystify the interface, get you moving like a pro, and show you how to connect with the incredible community that makes Alife special. Forget feeling lost or overwhelmed; our goal is to make your first hour an experience of empowerment and discovery.

In Alife, you have two primary ways of experiencing the world: moving your avatar and moving your camera. Your avatar is your digital self, the character you see on the screen. When you "walk," your avatar physically moves from one point to another. The camera is your viewpoint. You can move it independently of your avatar to look around, inspect objects up close, or get a bird's-eye view of your surroundings. Understanding the difference is the first step to fluid navigation.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Moving Your Avatar

Let's get you moving! These controls are the bread and butter of your virtual life.

1. Walking: Use the ↑ (Up), ↓ (Down), ← (Left), and → (Right) arrow keys on your keyboard. Pressing ↑ moves your avatar forward in the direction it is facing. The left and right arrows will turn your avatar.
2. Running: To move faster, hold down the Ctrl key while using the arrow keys. You'll notice your avatar's animation changes to a run. This is perfect for covering ground more quickly.
3. Jumping: Press the Page Up key. Your avatar will perform a small jump. This is useful for getting over small obstacles.
4. Flying: This is one of the most liberating features of Alife! Press the Home key to start or stop flying. While flying, use the Page Up key to gain altitude and the Page Down key to lose altitude. You still use the arrow keys to direct your movement in the air.
5. Stopping All Movement: If you find yourself stuck in a walking or flying animation, simply press the Esc key. This is your universal "stop" button.

Here’s a breakdown of the most important parts of your screen, typically arranged at the bottom of the viewer.

• Chat Bar: The long white bar at the very bottom is where you type to talk to people nearby. We'll cover this in detail in Lesson 3.
• Chat Button: This button (often a speech bubble icon) opens the "Conversations" window, where you can see nearby chat history and manage your private messages (IMs).
• People Button: This is incredibly useful. It opens a panel that shows you who is nearby, who your friends are, and what groups you belong to. You can use the "Nearby" tab to see a list of all avatars in your immediate vicinity.
• Inventory Button: Opens your inventory, which is like a digital backpack. It stores all your items: clothing, landmarks, notecards, objects, and more. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + I. Your inventory is organized into folders. The "Library" folder contains free items provided by the viewer to get you started.
• World Map Button: Opens the map of the entire Alife grid. You can use it to search for regions (like "Holodeck Grid School"), see where people are, and teleport to new locations. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + M.
• Minimap: This small map, often in the top right corner, shows your immediate surroundings. Green dots represent other people. It's great for situational awareness.

• Finding an Item: Press Ctrl + I to open your Inventory. In the search bar at the top of the inventory window, type "landmark". This will filter your inventory to show any landmarks you own. Landmarks are used to save locations so you can teleport back to them later.
• Finding a Place: Press Ctrl + M to open the World Map. In the search box, type Holodeck Grid School and press Enter. The map will center on our school region. You can then right-click on the map and choose "Teleport" to travel there instantly.
• Finding a Person: Click the "People" button on your toolbar. Go to the "Nearby" tab. You will see a list of all avatars within chat range. You can right-click on a name to get options like "View Profile" or "Send IM."

1. Local Chat (The Default):
   • How: Simply click on the chat bar at the bottom of your screen, type your message, and press Enter.
   • Who Hears It: Anyone within a 20-meter radius of your avatar. This is like a normal-toned conversation.
   • When to Use: General conversations, greeting people you pass by, participating in public discussions at events or in our classroom.
2. Whispering:
   • How: Before typing your message, type /whisper or press Ctrl + Shift + W. Your chat bar will indicate you are whispering.
   • Who Hears It: Only people within a 10-meter radius.
   • When to Use: For semi-private comments to someone standing right next to you without disturbing a larger group.
3. Shouting:
   • How: Before typing your message, type /shout or press Ctrl + Enter to send your message.
   • Who Hears It: Anyone within a 100-meter radius.
   • When to Use: To get the attention of a large area, ask for help, or make an announcement. Best Practice: Use shouting sparingly, as it can be disruptive.
4. Instant Messaging (IM):
   • How: Right-click on an avatar and select "IM" from the menu. A new window will pop up for your private conversation. You can also start an IM from the "People" panel.
   • Who Hears It: Only the person you are messaging. It is completely private.
   • When to Use: For one-on-one conversations, sharing private information, or talking to someone who is far away or in a different region.
5. Group Chat:
   • How: Once you join a group (like the Holodeck Grid School group), you can open the group's chat from the "People" panel -> "Groups" tab.
   • Who Hears It: Everyone in the group who is online.
   • When to Use: For community-wide discussions, asking for help from fellow students or instructors, and staying connected with the school community.

Best Practices: Interaction and Etiquette

Interacting with objects and people is simple: just right-click. This brings up a circular menu (called a "pie menu") with context-sensitive options.

• Right-clicking the ground: Gives you options like "Sit Here" or "Create" (if you have building rights).
• Right-clicking a chair: Will almost always give you a "Sit Here" option.
• Right-clicking an object: May give you options like "Touch," "Buy," or "Open." Touching an object often triggers a script, like turning on a light or receiving a notecard.
• Right-clicking an avatar: Gives you options like "Profile," "IM," "Pay," "Add Friend," and more.

Common Problems & Solutions

Problem: I'm stuck and can't move!

Solution: First, press the Esc key to cancel any stuck animations. If that doesn't work, try flying (Home key) to lift yourself off the ground. You might be caught on an invisible object. As a last resort, teleport! Go to the World menu -> Teleport Home.

Problem: My avatar looks like a cloud, a solid color, or is blurry (called "Baking").

Solution: Your textures haven't loaded properly. This is common. The fix is to "rebake." Press Ctrl + Alt + R. Your avatar will turn into a cloud temporarily and then reload its appearance correctly.

Problem: I've lost my Inventory / Conversations / other window!

Solution: First, try the toolbar button or keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+I for Inventory) to toggle it. Sometimes windows can get moved off-screen. In the top menu bar, go to World -> Show -> UI Size Controls and click "Reset All." This will bring all windows back to their default positions.

Problem: I'm falling through the floor and can't stop!

Solution: This happens when a region is restarting or your connection is slow. Don't panic! The quickest fix is to teleport to a safe, known location. Use your World Map to teleport to "Holodeck Grid School" or use the World -> Teleport Home menu option.
